A spa bathroom isn’t about adding every luxury feature. It’s about a room that feels calm, warm, and easy to use every day. The ideas below are the ones San Jose homeowners ask us for most, with real cost ranges so you can decide which ones are worth it for your home.
A spa bathroom is a bathroom designed around relaxation instead of just function. It usually has an open walk-in shower, a place to soak, natural textures like wood and stone, soft lighting, and hidden storage that keeps counters clear. Most spa-style luxury bathroom remodels we build in San Jose land between $40,000 and $75,000. Projects with a steam shower, moved plumbing, or natural stone can go higher.
The walk in shower is the single most requested spa feature in our bathroom remodels. Swapping an old tub-shower combo for a large open shower makes the room feel bigger and easier to use as you get older.
A walk-in shower is a shower you step straight into without a tub wall or a hinged door. It usually has a fixed glass panel or a frameless glass enclosure, a low curb or no curb, and enough room to move around.
A curbless shower has no step at all. The bathroom floor flows straight into the shower, and the shower floor slopes gently to a linear drain. It takes more work because the subfloor has to be lowered or rebuilt, but it’s the cleanest spa look and the safest option for aging in place.
| Spa shower upgrade | Typical San Jose cost |
|---|---|
| Tub-to-walk-in-shower conversion | $10,000 to $25,000 |
| Curbless shower (added to the above) | +$2,500 to $6,000 |
| Steam shower package | +$6,000 to $15,000 |
| Frameless glass enclosure | $1,800 to $5,000 |
| Rain head plus handheld valve set | $1,200 to $4,000 |
Walk in shower cost depends most on the size, the tile, and whether the drain has to move. Tile choice matters a lot here. Our San Jose tile installation guide covers the per-square-foot ranges.
A steam shower turns your walk-in shower into a private steam room. It needs a small steam generator (usually in a nearby closet or vanity), a fully sealed glass enclosure that goes to the ceiling, a sloped ceiling so condensation doesn’t drip on you, and a vapor barrier behind the tile. Because the shower has to be built for steam from day one, it’s much easier to add during a remodel than afterward.
Most people use a steam shower to relax and warm up after a long day or a workout. The warm, humid air can feel soothing on tight muscles, and many people find it helps them breathe more easily when they’re congested. It also doubles as a regular shower, so you don’t give up any space. If you have a heart condition, are pregnant, or have other health concerns, check with your doctor before using steam or heat regularly.
Many people use saunas to relax and unwind, and regular sauna bathing is a long tradition in Finland and other countries. Research has linked it with relaxation and general wellbeing, but it isn’t a substitute for medical care. Drink water, keep sessions short, and ask your doctor first if you have any health conditions.
A soaking tub is deeper than a standard tub, so you can sink in up to your shoulders. Freestanding tubs in acrylic, stone resin, or cast iron are the classic spa look, especially under a window. Installed, most freestanding soaking tubs run $4,000 to $12,000, including the tub, a floor-mounted filler, and plumbing changes. Check your floor first. A filled cast-iron or stone tub can weigh over 1,000 pounds, and we confirm the framing can carry it before ordering.
If you have room for only one, we usually recommend a bigger walk-in shower over a tub. Most people shower every day and soak only now and then. In a large primary bathroom, a “wet room” with the tub inside the glass shower enclosure gives you both.
Spa bathrooms feel calm because the materials are warm and the lines are simple. The luxury bathroom finishes we’re installing most in 2026 include:
Bright overhead light is the fastest way to ruin a spa feel. We plan three layers: recessed ceiling lights on a dimmer, lighted or backlit mirrors for grooming, and soft LED strips under the vanity or in the shower niche for evenings. A skylight or frosted clerestory window adds daylight without giving up privacy.
Moving plumbing, adding a steam generator, or adding a circuit for heated floors all need a permit through the City of San Jose Building Division. We handle permits as part of every bathroom project. Most spa bathroom remodels take 6 to 10 weeks on site once materials are in.

Squeegee the glass after every shower, which prevents most hard-water spots. Once a week, spray a mix of equal parts white vinegar and warm water, let it sit a few minutes, then wipe with a microfiber cloth. For heavy buildup, use a paste of baking soda and water, then rinse. A factory protective coating on new glass makes cleaning much easier.
Most guidance suggests about 15 to 20 minutes per session for healthy adults, and less if you’re new to it. Get out sooner if you feel dizzy or unwell, and drink water before and after. Check with your doctor first if you have a heart condition, are pregnant, or take medications that affect heat tolerance.
A walk-in shower is a shower you step straight into without climbing over a tub. It typically has a fixed glass panel or frameless enclosure, a low curb or no curb, and enough room to move around comfortably.
A curbless shower has no step at the entry. The bathroom floor continues into the shower, which slopes gently to a linear drain. It requires lowering or rebuilding part of the subfloor, and it’s the best option for accessibility and aging in place.
A spa bathroom is designed for relaxation as well as function. It typically includes a walk-in or steam shower, a soaking tub, warm natural materials, layered dimmable lighting, and comfort features like heated floors or a heated towel rail.
